Out of the black box – towards the audience

panel discussion

Since the founding of the explore dance network – Dance Network for Young Audiences in 2018, over 25 pop-ups have been created, discovering new stages in school classrooms, museums, cultural centres, foyers, youth centres and public spaces. What are the challenges and opportunities of producing mobile pieces? What perspectives does choreographic work gain from collaborating with children and young people in the conception and production process? And why choreograph for young audiences at all? Dance professionals from the explore dance network and project managers report on these questions from their experience and practice. In exchange with the audience, the focus is on bringing together cultural education and artistic practice.

Tanzplattform Deutschland sees itself as a forum for presenting current developments and innovative trends in contemporary dance in and from Germany. Tanzplattform was founded in 1994 by Nele Hertling, Walter Heun and Dieter Buroch and began as a trilogy in Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich. Since then, it has taken place biennially in different German cities and is awarded by the community of co-organisers, who determine the respective host and sponsor. The community of co-organisers includes all institutions that have hosted the Tanzplattform in recent years and are actively committed to promoting contemporary dance in Germany.

Where the boys are

A game. A dance. A fight. A relationship. A performance.

‘Where the Boys Are’ is a playful exploration of where dance meets martial arts. Examining and reconstructing the vocabulary of different fighting practices, the two performers transform the arena into a zone of performance which is sensitive and intimate. Two opposing forces arrive to a match, each wishes to conquer the other, but eventually through continuous rituals of collision their bodies soften. This new vulnerability invites one to discover the other and introduces new ways of touching – with care and support, which often do not exist in relationships between men.

XOXO

How does it feel, when someone gets so close that you can feel their breath? Should you stay or go? What does it really mean to be close to someone? Insecurity, excitement and doubt sometimes stand in the way of the desire to explore another body. Far from the sexualized images of the Internet, xoxo questions what it means to desire another body, while encouraging a confident exchange of feelings. Together with the audience, three dancers and a musician explore body-spaces, in which people communicate with each other and come together to discover physical familiarity, individual safe spaces and various forms of intimacy.
